I'm on a quest to find a good preworkout protein. What do you guys use, any recommendations. Taste is a major factor, trying to choke down somthing that taste like shoe polish or some other crap before a workout really takes away some of the intensity..

Thank for your help gang.

I like optimum nutrition. The chocolate doesn't taste bad at all...

I use the vanilla but whey is better for post workout, so I've heard. I'm brain dead right now and can't think of the name of the other type of protein its not soy.

Whey combo or unpro from the protein factory. Both have a variety of Hydrosolate protein.

Thats the one thanks. Is casein protein truly better for preworkout or should I just stick to whey?

I don't know if it's specifically a good pre workout protein, but Fitness Labs Whey Isolate Vanilla tastes very good.

Some type of whey would be your best bet. Either an isolate or a hydrosolate ie. a low molecular weight protein. The idea is to spark anabolism and casein just wont do that because of it's curdling effect in the gut. A good suggestion is to drink half your before your work out than sip on the rest while you train to constantly supply aminos. If you drink casein it will not produce what you want it to produce, it's better used at other time throughout the day as an anti-catabolic.

Check out http://www.allthewhey.com for great prices on unflavored and vanilla whey isolate. They also have concentrate, but I recommend whey isolate (better absorption) for pre-workout.

It mixes easily and the vanilla is very lightly flavored, so it goes down easy. I mix mine with lemonade crystal light, and it tastes pretty darn good. They're working on a chocolate isolate, but they don't want to drop the protein per scoop too much, and you have to add so much cocoa you start to lose 2-3 grams of protein/scoop. I'll be curious to see what they come up with.

Some of you guys should go to proteinfactory.com or proteincustomizer.com and click on proteins near the top. You can look at profiles of the different protein types and when/why they are best used by clicking on them and it could likely answer a lot of your questions.

I use only whey conc, but that's just because it's all I can afford.

Protein factory is the only place that I buy protein. It's great for bulk orders. If you do order from them don't get chocolate; as stated previously it lowers your protein content.

Optimum is pretty good. The chocolate does taste really good. It's also a pretty good bargain.

Do not take casein before working out. The benefit of casein is it's slow digestion rate, great before bed or in the mourning when you won't get alot of protein till lunch, horrible when digestion takes more blood flow from the working muscles. Stick with Whey, about 1 hour before working out. It is important to take whey before working out because the body goes into a less catabolic state, saving hard earned muscle. I agree with Optimum whey, mixes smooth as water, no chunking or thickness. Tastes like cold hot chocolate. And, for about 40 bucks you can get a 10 lb bag at some online retailers.

This I quote from HSN Anabolic Primer and Driver Protein Powder:
"Anabolic Primer™ is a made from "fast protein" and was designed specifically for pre-workout supplementation. It enters the blood stream rapidly and elevates amino acid levels sufficient to induce muscle protein synthesis. Anabolic Primer™ is taken 15 minutes before training to enhance amino acid supply when blood flow to working muscles is at its peak. Anabolic Driver™ is a "slow protein" and was designed specifically for post-workout supplementation. It enters the blood stream slowly and supports muscle protein synthesis for hours after it is taken. Anabolic Driver™ is taken immediately after training to enhance the uptake of amino acids when insulin sensitivity is at its peak, and then continues to support protein synthesis until your next meal."

I use Sportlabs essential whey, ever since I tryed it I have never turned back. it is by far the best tasting(both choc and banana are heavenly), it mixes so easy, very affordable and best of all I haven't experienced any digestive discomforts with it, as some do cause!
