I have tried a couple of supplements in order to have a "better" night and fall asleep faster
but nothing really convince me
neither 5 HTP, nor valerian root, GABA, Zn/Mg combo,.....
What have you tried that actually work (w/o placebo effect) ?

Give Meltatonin a try man....
Sex works for me sometimes ..... perhaps I should try it with a partner to see if that works even better.

ZMA drops me like a bomb.
But it also makes it damn hard to get up in the morning.

Well I've been resorting to Tylenol PM. I know it's bad but I just can't seel when I want to without it. My sleepiness always gravitates towards 3am no matter where I am or what my schedual has been.
Anyone know how harsh it is on your liver?

Tylenol is bad for your liver if you take around 1000mg a day. I doubt you are taking that much. The diphenhydramine (Benadryl) that is in it to help you sleep may very well make you sleepy and help you fall asleep. The bad news is that it is not really doing you any favors in that it does not allow you to progress into a deep sleep. In order for us to feel refreshed in the morning we must get deep (stage 4 and REM) sleep which is the time when our neurotransmitters are replenished. This is part of the reason that you feel so "hungover" the next morning.

Thanks baby doc. I don't feel so hungover with two Tylenols at night. Perhaps my body's natural sleep mechanisms take over. The diphenhydramine doesn't INHIBIT natrual sleep functions does it?
Hey BabyDoc......where did you come up with 1000 mg. a day. Is that something new. It has always been up to 4000 mg. a day on acetaminophen (tylenol) and 2400 mg. a day of ibuprofen. Is there something new out? I think I did hear something about tylenol recently but did not get the full story.
The following protocol is intended to support organs susceptible to damage by acetaminophen, either through prolonged usage or alcohol-acetaminophen interactions. This program is not intended to replace medical attention if acetaminophen poisoning is suspected.
Acetaminophen, while generally safe for short-term use, can cause problems with long-term administration. These problems include liver and kidney damage and gastrointestinal bleeding. Those who drink excessive alcohol are at risk and should not take Tylenol or any product containing acetominophen at all.
Those who must chronically take acetaminophen drugs should take vitamin C, NAC, L-cysteine, taurine, vitamin E succinate, and milk thistle extract. Those who develop liver damage should consider taking SAMe.
Warning: A known acetaminophen overdose is an emergency situation requiring hospitalization. If the amount of acetaminophen taken is unknown, do not wait until symptoms develop to make a decision to seek hospital care. By that time it is too late and death may be likely. Do not attempt to treat this at home with oral Mucosil (N-acetyl-cysteine.) Hospital monitoring is essential.
N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC), the active ingredient in Mucosil, suppresses the toxic free radicals generated by ingested acetaminophen. Take N-acetylcysteine or L-cysteine, 300-600 mg, with at least 1 gram of vitamin C with each dose of acetaminophen. Use at least 3 times more vitamin C than NAC or L-cysteine.
Acetaminophen-induced free-radical liver damage may be treated by taking a multinutrient formula that contains glutathione (50 mg), vitamin C (500 mg), and cysteine (200 mg) with each dose of acetaminophen. This antioxidant formula will provide significant protection to the liver. (These supplements may also be taken separately.)
For chronic use of acetaminophen, milk thistle (silibinin) extract, 250 mg 2-3 times daily, may increase the amount of the protective antioxidant glutathione.
S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe), for prevention and reversal of liver damage, 400-1200 mg a day. Dosages above 400 mg can cause dry mouth, gastric problems, and restlessness. Build slowly to tolerance.
Taurine, 1000-3000 mg a day, supports the kidney under stress.
Vitamin E succinate, 800-1200 IU a day, supports the kidney under stress.
Polyenylphosphatidylcholine (PPC), 1800 mg a day, protects the liver from noxious materials.
Chronic use of analgesic drugs to treat headaches may actually be the cause of the headaches. Under a physician's care, try stopping all use of these drugs. If this proves to be very difficult, consult with a physician who utilizes intravenous DMSO or would consider short-term administration of corticosteroids.

I find Ambien 10mg does the job nicely. As yet I have had NO success with any of the OTC supps, with the possible exception of Dramamine or Benadryl. Of course Ambien is not a long term solution to sleep disorders, but if it's just an occasional bad patch then I Ambien is Da Bomb.
In emergencies, I go with Dramamine or Benadryl because they give you pure dimenhydrinate/diphenhydramine without the liver damaging potential of Tylenol. But as mentioned by BabyDoc, this stuff comes with a residual drowsiness and sluggishness that is not optimal, and the sleep doesn't leave you fully ready to face a challenging day!
give this site a try if you can't get asleep:

ZMA or 6-oxo. I'm normally a restless sleeper, wake up if a pin drops, can't get comfortable, and always seem to wake up that irritating 30 minutes before the alarm. Started 6-oxo and I sometimes have trouble getting up now.
