I love these things. Im niot genetically gifted w/ calves so i have to work a lil harder. Ive been doing seated for 4 wks straight and can really tell they are widening out the Soleus. Im gonna add another exercise to this at the end of the wk, then phase em out for a few wks while adding yet another exercise.

Gatta keep em guessing.

Anyone else care to share their most recent fav for calves?

These work best for me too. But if my knees are fucking with me I hit another machine and just hit it hard!
All that weight on my bent knee is no no.

I have seen good results when i do calves in the leg press. It's just a simpel calve raise but it works for me. Also sometimes i will do one leg a time and this works good. Try different positions with your feet and shit to mix it up.

Dont forget to work the Tibialis. I think you have to look at it from a "lower leg" perspective, not just 'calves'. I just put an entry in my journal about my "lower leg" workout.

Leg press with the toes, in and out...and also the Hack squat machine, face down. I don't care for the Smith loaded action too much, and, our gym is lacking any other calf machine other than the seated. You could always do some donkeys on the bench spotters ledge or something....? There's a lot of stuff to variate with. ..

We do seated calves, pushing off of the inner balls of our feet.We use light weight, because its hard to keep the stress on that area with much more weight, without cheating. We also do standing calves with toes straight, and single leg calves on the leg press, also pushing off of the inner ball(??) of our feet.

Seated calf - soleus (inside muscle)

Standing calf - gastrocnemius - I like the leg press version or smith machine

Tibialis anterior - something keeping your heel stationary and lifting the weight with your foot. We have a seated grip machine that works great for these- just load on some weight on it and lift. Most people I know don't work these seperately but I definitely recommend them for skiers

A must to prevent things such as, poor symetry, heel pain, shin pain, knee pain even hip pain, foot pain. Your feet act as shock absorbers, it would be like your car having good springs, but stuffed shocks. or vice versa.

Ah. . the seated calf raises. . .a great exercise indeed! With this exercise I think it is important to work with high reps. Since the calves are hard to develop, I do think that high rep training is necessary to activate those deep/dense muscle fibers. I don't think there is anything wrong with training to failure on calves.

Here is generally what I do:

first set: 50-70 reps (to failure)
second set: 30 reps (to failure)
third set: 15-20 reps (to failure)

I find this exercises har to execute, especially when finishing upper leg training. When the quads and hams are bloated with blood, I tend to get some cramping in my calves when reaching the higher reps.

Ever try to walk on your heels only after a calf workout? It ain't easy, I do that sometime to "help" work the tibialis.

However, my favorite exercise for calves will definitely be the Standing Calf Raise. I feel that I can manipulate the way I work the calf muscle in a way that I don't get while seated.

I also like using the leg press machine for a different feel.
