Hello ladies.

A young lady on another board asked this question:

I was watching Law and Order last night and they mentioned something about females who take birth control pills. They said that their testosteronce levels are higher.

Does anyone know if this is fact or not? And if so, why?

Does someone have info I can pass on?

TIA
Jenn

Better keep that quiet or Congress might make BCs Schedule III.

Law and Order, a good source of sound scientific info, my first choice over the journals. Bet they could present a balanced perspective on AAS as well.

Regardless of whether BCs alter circulating androgens or not, they don't build muscle or enhance performance. Some of the progesterones have 19-nor structures, will reduce HDL and may demonstrate some androgenicity, but not anabolic characteristics.

Sounds like L & O was trying to paint the old testosterone = evil behavior picture. Problem is, estrogen is the more likely villain.

In what context did they use the BC = higher estrogen link?

The only thing worse (panders more bullshit) than the media are made for TV movies and drama shows.

You can also bet that if there was some subtle anti-something message, our tax dollars were being used to grease the producers asshole.

Thanks for the response. I didn't see the episode so I can comment on it. (Although the test=evil theory seems like it might have been the plot.)

This girl is about 17 and lives with her Dad. I asked what was the reason for the question but she hasn't answered yet.

I don't know what she saw on TV, but it MAY have been something to do with the fact that they often give birth control pills to women who already HAVE abnormally high testosterone because it actually decreases their testosterone. Quite the opposite to what this women saw (or thought she saw) on TV. Maybe she misunderstood.

I actually know this episode because it's one of the three shows I ever watch on television at all.

The BC/Test thing was a mid-show theory that would be shot down later on by another doctor character. It was the two cops -who frequently make all sorts of classic TV-show dumbass guesses- who thought they were onto something, and got shot down in the 'order' part of the show, being the court drama.

Just chiming in...
