Since I don't know much about strongman comps or training, I just have to ask. Where did the stone lift originate? It looks like maybe something people were forced to do at some point and maybe a sport developed out of it. Dunno, just curious though. That takes some serious strength and technique. Good work!

Stone lifting is very popular in countries like Scotland. I believe that when they were under the control of England they used stone lifting to develop strength for battle. Stone lifting has since been a test of manhood ever since.

At least I think that is how it goes.

APF only RJ, I like the idea that the stone work will increase my DL and strengthen my core. I will do it regularly on my speed SQ days after speed pulls to work core strength.

Thanks, someday I will be big and strong.

Was curious if you got sore anywhere or felt anywhere specific from that stone.

Right on Foos.

I tried picking that thing up kind of casually (at the time I thought it was a little under 200lbs). I'm thinking "Hell, I deadlift in the high 600's, this will be a joke". Wrong!

I was in the middle of a max-effort bench session, so I didn't take an earnest try at the thing, but it's safe to say I have a whole new level of respect for strongman competitors (not that I didn't think highly of them before, but you get the point).

Isn't the heaviest stone in WSM comps over 400lbs?

The heaviest stone at the actual WSM comp is 354. But at most competitions nowadays the last stone is anywhere from 385 to 420.

That's incredible. I'm getting a hard-on to give strongman a try now. There was an article put up on Elite by Mike Miller talking about training for both, and how each one complements the other:

Mike posts here every now and then, maybe he will weigh in on his article.

I have a vid of Magnus Sameulson lifting a 200kg stone in exhibition, that is insane!

But also remember, strongmen use tacky in competition, and that really helps with the grip.

yeah I have the standard marks on my forearms and I only lifted it 3 times but I can feel it in my upper back from the last lifting part probably because I had nothing to set it on and held it for a count each time. Oh and also on my calf/shin area I scraped the ever loving shit out of it! LOL. I will take a pic of the marks and post it, I happened to bring my camera for my ME BP tonight.

Well my computer sucks it is telling me it can't find the page. Oh well, tomorrow will be my maiden voyage into the world of strongman training! Can't wait!

Good shit.

Do you feel you were hampered by the fact that you couldn't just drop the stone after the set? Seems like you had to make a lot of effort to put it down gently on the floor.

Today I'll try to make a video of "plate shouldering" I do every once in a while to mimic stones.

I only put it down as softly as I could because I didn't want to damage the stone or the floor of the gym. I am hoping to get something to set it on or maybe a bar like clint used in his recent vid to lift it over and drop it on a tire.
