My wife gave me the 'okay' to turn our garage into a home gym. It is a huge area... and I've already rubber floored it. I want to stock it with gym quality equipment, not the cheapo stuff, and I by chance went to Craigslist to see if this kind of stuff ever goes up for sale there.

Making a long story short, I'm now getting EVERYTHING for my home gym off of Craigslist. This place is a goldmine for anybody looking to stock a home gym. Last night I bought a brand new squat rack, adjustable bench, curl bar, olympic bar, weight tree, and 400+ lbs of Olympic weights for $250. The retail on this brand and equipment is north of $1,500.

I asked the guy why he was selling it and he said, "I bought it intending to use it, and it has just been sitting there. It is the clothes rack in my laundry room."

I bought a gym quality V dip bar, retail $500, for $50 last week.

I just missed getting a full set of dumbells 5-100 lbs with racks that went for $200.

Tonight, I'm going to go pick up about 400 lbs of Olymic plates for $50.

I'm posting this in training because I know many of the people here want to stock home gyms. If you need to do this on a budget, my tip is... start watching Craigslist.

And prepare to get picky and choosy. So many people buy home gym equpment and never use it... really really good equipment... that there seems to be an endless supply going up for sale.

Got Craigslist... then pick your city... then take a look at SPORTING in the for sale section. But also run the search terms in all categories for items for sale. I ran "Squat" to look for squat racks and squat cages... and I found the list in GENERAL not in SPORTING, but most of the stuff gets listed in SPORTING.

Don't jump to buy the first thing you see because great stuff keeps coming up again and again at dirt cheap prices.

I'm hoping I can find somebody that has dumbells from 100 to 200 lbs. I think if I watch long enough I'll find them.

Squat cages with adjustable benches and 3-400 lbs of weight go up a couple times a week in the $250 range.

There is also an endless supply of treadmills and exercise bikes that I have no interest in at all... but it shows what really happens to most people's home gym equipment... it just sits there.

Oh, and no joke... watch the FREE section. It is amazing how often good equipment shows up for free just so people can get it out of their house.

USED IS THE WAY TO GO...IT'S NOT LIKE AN IRON PLATE IS GOING TO GET WORN OUT. UNLESS PEOPLE ARE SERIOUS ABOUT TRAINING EVEN THE TREADMILLS AND THE LIKE WILL ONLY BE SLIGHTLY USED, IF THEY WERE SERIOUS, THE EQUIPMENT WOULD NOT BE FOR SALE.

SG,

What key words did you search for on craigslist? I tried searching "gym equiptment" and similar keywords but no go.

SG,

What key words did you search for on craigslist? I tried searching "gym equiptment" and similar keywords but no go.

First... don't search the whole site... only search the "for sale" section.

I typed in SQUAT and got squat rack and cages
BENCH got me several types of benches

I just picked up 400 lbs of Olympic plates for $100 by typing WEIGHTS

I got a great dip bar off of DIP

Now I'm hitting DUMBELLS and DUMBBELLS to watch for a full set of dumbells

LEG PRESS is also on my search list

It's simple... just hit simple descriptive terms of the gear you are looking for

Here is also a link to a sample ad... a bench press... a lat machine.. Olympic bar and a couple hundred lbs of weights for $100

Craigslist is the dumping ground for stuff people have that they don't use. Craigslist doesn't charge for placing ads like eBay does... so people use it often just to clear room in their garages.

Great site. There's always some hilarious reads on the "Best-of-Craigslist" link on the left hand side of the page.

Lol! Thanks for the link, I just found a fitness equipment vendor trying to bootleg new merchandise out of his territory! Busted! I'll have fun on the phones tomorrow with this.

Cool site though, had heard of it but never visited.

Yeah, one of my clients gave away a leg press machine he had in his home gym... fully commercial piece of equipment - just gave it away.
