Love it! :D Looks like it was a good comp day for all! Def a good video to have out there about strongwoman... dispells that myth that you have to be massive and manly to compete.

Was that Dr. Nowack making a cameo appearance in that vid?

Steve Pulcinella
07-18-07, 10:37 AM
Yes, Dr Nowack and I both coached her that day. How lucky can a girl get at her first show huh. Kirk is a great guy, he and Kevin have been training at my place for years.

Kirk is a real quality guy. LLG and I have ran into him in a good number of contests and e-mailed from time to time. Class act.

Got a chance to talk to the whole crew from iron sport during the yoke and carry - great group and Steve is one big dude! It is pretty cool when you can talk to a woman who is jerking 275lbs!

I had no idea I'd actually met you in person. :) You'll have to come down to Moorestown sometime and train with us OLers - we've even got jerk boxes!

Thanks for the replies! Training for and competing in this strongman competition was a great experience for me. Mike really captured the frustration of my first couple event days - I have to thank Craig Strohmeier for helping me find a technique for the axle. And Kirk Nowack has helped me immensely with the events - he's very patient teaching the events and has always been generous with his time and advice. Of course, my main coach was my husband Steve, and I have to officially apologize once again for yelling at him when I got overly frustrated. :) He had to remind me a couple times my frustration was with the events, and not the person coaching the events.

Mike Pulcinella really put together an awesome video of this competition - you can tell he has a good understanding of the strength sports and of the mentality of the athletes who compete in them. I really like the way he laid out the video, starting with the contrast between the male and female athletes. Maybe this video will help introduce more women into the sport. :)

He's also done a couple documentaries (Raising the Bar and Raising the Bar 2) featuring his brother Dave Pulcinella, an amateur bodybuilder. These documentaries really highlight the dedication and sacrifice necessary to compete at a high level in physique sports.

Oh yeah, and so much for the the myth that lifting heavy makes women big and bulky, huh?

I showed my mom the video cause she always seems to think the women I compete with are gonna be all brutish... basically she thinks I'm nuts. But, I think she already thought that about rugby too.

What is it with women from the older generations? My mom is the same - when she saw pictures from my figure competitions, she thought I was huge, manly, and gross. Then, I went home right after one of the comps and she realized I was actually quite smaller since I was 20 lbs lighter than my maintenance weight. Then, she kind of eased up on me.

I think women from previous generations would only lift something if they HAD to! The concept of lifting for FUN is foreign to most of them.

Thanks to everyone for your comments. I had a blast making that video and hope I get to do more. I find strength competitions to be especially dramatic and interesting.

Seeing those women compete really opened my eyes! They were not what I expected them to be and I am proud to be able help spread the word about strongwomen.

JJ! Damn girl! Can you say STRONG Chick!

LOL - thanks Sassy!

The sucky part of this contest is I was the only heavy weight of the four females, so I got stuck doing events up to 100 lbs. heavier than the other women. I was enviously watching them cruise along with a 60 lb. keg vs my 160 lb keg, 300 lb yoke vs my 400 lb yoke, and repping 225 on the DL vs my 315.

But there's no way I'll drop down to 140 lbs to compete as a LW - my OL coaches would KILL me!! I threatened to do that at one point since I've dropped to 135 lbs for Figure, and that idea was nixed by my OL coaches immediately. If anything, they want me to be heavier. :)

Amazing video and AMAZING performance!!!!!

And as I have said before...there should never be a Heavy Weight Women's class. Only Light, Middle, and possibly Super Middleweight if needed.

I do not know if I qualify for being a woman of previous generation (I am 48 years young), but some of us still lift heavy. I have competed since 1997 in strong woman (with a break between 1998-2002. I have by now competed in over 30 competitions and I am still going strong! I am competing in Britain's strongest woman on the 12th of August and the after that I am off to Norway for an international competition.

I really liked the video, it shows the guts and determinations needed to get the job done!

I always try to encourage others to give it a go, and I love the fact we never really look like what (some) people expect (big, musclar, and manly). we come in all sizes and shapes which is great.

I am hoping to come over to the USA to compete before I retire (but I have no plan to retire so far), but I am looking forward to meet some more of my Amercan sisters!

Best wishes
Hanne (Worls strongest grand Mother).

Wow! I would love to meet you - you'll have to keep us updated if you decide to come over here and compete. It's very inspirational you're actively competing in a sport that's kind of rough on the body. :)

Update:

Jalaine's strongwoman video has been by far the most popular vid clip on my Youtube page! To date it has gotten over 20,000 views!! I take no credit for that...it's because of the inspiring women that people love it.
